Hold on to Your Britches

soon to be re-named :)

soon to be re-named 🙂

Hold on to your britches, y’all, we are going to take you along with us on our newest adventure. David and I have decided after discussion (and more discussion) to embrace our primitive natures and move out to the woods. This process has only begun to take shape, while we are mainly in the honeymoon stage, viewing mostly through rose-tinted glasses, we have acknowledged that this is going to be very challenging.

In approximately eight weeks we will be moving about twenty-five miles outside of town. We will dwell in a camper that technically sleeps 6 (our tribe is 7…the seventh one is little though) and a 250 square foot shed. We are in the process of converting this shed into a beautiful living space. The children are in charge of naming the shed because, well the shed just sounds creepy. Some of the suggestions have been “Frank’s”, as in I’m going to Frank’s, even though we don’t know anyone here named Frank. This, by the way is Noah’s contribution. “The Library” is another, if any of you know us well, you know we have enough books to open a library. I will keep you updated on the progress of naming the shed.

Our vision is to begin to create some other comfortable spaces. David has already built a deck and covered area for a washing machine. Notice I did not say a drier, we will hang our clothes. Yes, we will. Next we hope to build a lovely outdoor kitchen, some composting toilets and outdoor showers. All to be utilized in the much warmer months.

David has a great idea to build each child there very own 10X10 space, perhaps placed in a circle. Each dwelling will be a learning experience in alternative building. For instance one may be a sandbag structure, another a pallet house, Ayvah has requested a house on stilts.  They have also requested a picnic table in the center.

Of course, simultaneously, we will be planting food, experimenting with solar power, catching rainwater, building a chicken coop  etc. and ultimately building a home. While this all sounds a bit overwhelming, this lifestyle has been a dream of ours for decades. With much patience, grace, heartiness, and openness we will move forward one day at a time. Embracing the beauty and wonder of simplicity and complexity.

Ps. I will be documenting all this with pictures as well…so stay tuned…here we gooooooooo!!!!!!

Getting to know us and what’s new

Hello there folks. Here is a brief description of me, my family and our new direction in life.

I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 18 years. That’s over half of my life…wow! We have five super cool kids. Our eldest, Aiyannah just turned 13. Our second child Noah, and our only son, is almost 10. The middle child, Ayvah is 6. Lydiah is 4 and the baby Luna is 1 1/2.

Our children are home schooled. We have home schooled from the beginning for several reasons. Mainly, we like hanging out with our kids. It’s great to be present for those teachable moments all throughout the day! We also hope to encourage a strong sense of spirituality and moral justice in them.  My husband and I put considerable value on free thinking. We want our kids to have the freedom to explore different viewpoints, think critically about those ideas, and make their own decisions. We are not convinced they would receive this kind of learning experience at any school.

We ascribe to many different education philosophies…a little unschooling, charlotte mason, traditional, some of this and some of that. We read A LOT!!! The library is a favorite spot of ours. I  let the children direct some of their learning. I really want to inspire a  a love of learning in them… lifetime learners who will make the world a better place!

Another thing my husband and I have been passionate about since we were teenagers is to find that special piece of earth and to live as simply as possible with it. We have always been drawn to a life that involves growing and making your own things, then sharing those skills and knowledge with others. The creator and it’s creation are sacred. In my case, the closer I am to Her/His creation the more clearly I can identify Her/His character. Learning to live in balance and respect with nature is very important to us.

Over the years we have lived in several types of intentional communities. We have lived in familial, spiritual, and social justice communities.  There have been both positive and negative aspects in each of those experiments. Some greatly rewarding and others deeply painful. We have learned a lot. Most recently we have been given an opportunity to combine all those aforementioned forms of community.  We are in the very beginning planning stages and excited to see how that will all unfold.

For the moment, we are renting a house just four doors down from David’s sister which has been quite lovely! Some evenings are spent together making bread, kimche, yogurt or music, bottling kombucha, pickling peppers and making delicious meals from whatever comes out of Liz’s garden (David’s sister). A worm farm David began a few months ago, rests on a table in our living room. We have also started an indoor windowsill garden consisting of ginger, lettuce, and green onion. Oh and Liz is giving two of the kids piano lessons!

So there is a brief glimpse into our life…It’s just the beginning. I hope to chronicle the next chapters of our story soon. Love and light!

Another Phase

Hello there friends, strangers and family…this is a very new thing for me. I am much more familiar with paper and pen. Usually the stuff I write is locked away in dusty journals. I have decided to enter this strange form of cyber communication because I want to stay connected to you all and perhaps free my brain of it’s ramblings. So we begin…

My husband, our five children, Pjohn and I just moved from Fl to Aiken. It was horribly difficult to leave everything we knew and all we loved to travel here. We have many deep, loving relationships with folks in FL. Saying goodbye (or see you later, for Claudine’s sake) was almost more than I could bare.

We have been here one month now. While we still miss all of you back home we are excited for the opportunities we have here. It is spring and new life is springing up all around. We are making new friends, playing new music and exploring new woods.

Thank you for all the expressions of love and encouragement.

Love and light
